About Me and Ikkos Equine Sanctuary and Animal Haven
Hi there and welcome to my site!
My name is Laura Mc Ilrath. I live in Oudtshoorn, western Cape, South Africa and I run a self funded equine and animal sanctuary on a 37.5 hectare farm. I currently love and care for 67 animals (5 dogs, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 1 rabbit, 16 sheep, 1 angora goat, 7 miniature pot bellied pigs, 33 horses and 7 donkeys).
All of the animals here were either abused, abandoned or just in need of a loving new home at Ikkos Equine Sanctuary and Animal Haven.
The horses have free roam of the farm and spend their days being horses. I believe there is no greater pleasure than to watch the horses running, playing, swimming, dozing, grazing, and just doing what horses do best - being horses! All of the animals here are my children and treated as such, they are played with and interacted with daily and given tons of love, attention and treats. The farm is a little piece of paradise for me and a piece of paradise for all of my animals as well.

The idea of this course is to give a basic, comprehensive workshop where various aspects of equine behaviour are talked about, investigated and observed. It is a very practical course where what you learn can be applied to real life situations.
Some of the topics that will be looked at include: social behaviour, communication, behaviour seen at various stages of life (foal, yearling, adult, elderly etc), a basic introduction to how pheromones and the nervous system affect behaviour, training in relation to behaviour, sexual behaviour, agonistic behaviour and behavioural problems - how to recognise them and possible solutions.
The main aim of the course is to give the hands on experience so you can see certain behaviours first hand and be able to recognise and understand them. Hand outs will be given that can be taken away and read at leisure.

*18th December 2010 - Looking forward to the arrival of my 2 new family members Mam (paint horse) and 4 month old foal (leopard spot appaloosa), Theia and Kilides. Theia in Greek mythology was 1 of the original 7 titanesses associated with light and the sky. It means Divine and wide shining. Her full name is 'Ikkos Painted Sky'. Kilides means spots in Greek. His full name is 'Ikkos Kaleidoscope'. Ikkos means 'horse' and 'The Great Light' in Greek.
